Andrew and I decided to give Mnt. Dana another try. Last time we tried we had some equipment issues that prevented us from making it – we did make it to the base of the climb. This time we had conditions issues: NO STINKING ICE. The drought has taken a large toll on the Sierra ice pack.
Regardless, we had a good time. Well … mostly.
We got started the Friday 1t 1:30PM and by 5PM we were at camp; after hiking 7 miles of a hard trail and gaining about 2K ft elevation to 11.5K ft. We spent the night there.
The next day we thought about hiking the ridge around the Dana glacier to the peek, from the Dana plateau to Mnt Dana, but … we were concerned about a section. We decided to head down to the car and then go up the regular route. So, we hiked down another 7 hard miles.
We started on the normal route at around 9AM. And we made it about 4 miles into it. I started to not feel very well (long story) and we turned around.
All together 22 miles of hard core hiking and about 5K ft elevation gain, in less than 24 hours. While we did not achieve our objective of getting to the top on Mnt Dana, I think we can feel good about what we did accomplish.
Enjoy the pictures.
